Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that the visit would further strengthen bilateral ties. In a post on X, he stated:
“Chào mừng, Excellency! General Secretary and President of Vietnam, Mr. To Lam, has arrived in New Delhi on his first State Visit to India. He was accorded a warm welcome and received by Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai.”

Highlighting the significance of the visit, Jaiswal added that this year marks 10 years of the India–Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, and the visit is expected to further deepen the multifaceted relationship.

Earlier in the day, President Lam offered prayers at the Mahabodhi Temple in Bihar. He was welcomed in Gaya by Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary.

President Lam, who also serves as General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, will remain in India until May 7.

On May 6, he will receive a ceremonial welcome at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold wide-ranging discussions with him on bilateral, regional, and global issues.

President Droupadi Murmu is also scheduled to meet the visiting leader, along with other senior dignitaries in New Delhi.

During his visit, President Lam will travel to Mumbai, where he is set to visit the National Stock Exchange, meet Maharashtra’s Chief Minister and Governor, and attend a business forum.

India and Vietnam share deep historical and civilisational ties that have strengthened steadily over time.

The visit coincides with the 10th anniversary of the elevation of bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, established during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Vietnam in 2016.

The Ministry of External Affairs noted that the high-level engagement is expected to inject fresh momentum into bilateral ties and expand cooperation across multiple sectors.
